VOWS Awards 2010 – Nominated for Best Videographer!

Yeay!

Just received the fabulous news that Design Scotland Video have been nominated in the Best Videographer Category of the Scottish VOWS Awards for 2010 !!

We’re chuffed to bits here as the Awards are voted for by our couples, and really does show that we’re definitely doing something right on the Customer Service front!

It’s the 5th year in a row now that we’ve been nominated, and each year it gets tougher and tougher as the sheer number of votes goes up!  The VOWS Awards is going from strength to strength and we’re just delighted to have been nominated again.

Let’s hope that we can pull off another win this year!  Fingers, and everything else that is crossable, will be crossed on the 8th November in Glasgow.

Great to see the rest of ‘Team Paris‘ also nominated!!  Same for the wonderful Yvonne an awesome Scottish Wedding Planner !

For the full list of nominees do check it out here

Off to go put that bottle of fizz in the fridge for later!

Paris. La bande annonce du film

Bon Jour!

Firstly, I have to admit my French is pretty lacking and I managed to get by with some basic polite conversation, but after the past few days I have totally fallen in love with Paris.  A wonderful city.

Stuart and I spent a fabulous few days with Niels & Alie (plus Jed & Beth) from Blue Sky Photography, Jay & Christina from Elemental Weddings, and Mark & Donna (plus Jack & Hannah) from Archibald Photography.

The main brief was for everyone to have some fun, explore the city and relax… One day however was set aside for a chilled photo shoot across the city, shooting each other and generally having some fun in this amazing place.

Our brief was to capture some of that fun on film , as well as have a good time, which we most certainly did. (That’s the last time I let Stu order the drinks though… a 2L round of Kronenbourg really wasn’t the best of nightcaps!)

We had a fabulous time filming, exploring, taking pics…..and it was brilliant getting to know everyone better!

I discovered many things on the trip, including….. houseboats make me a little nauseous (it was fabulously cool, just my silly motion sickness!), Kronenbourg is bad for you, brand new Converse give you blisters if you spend 16hours a day in them, plus backpacks and Paris Metro doors do not like each other (Thank you Jay for pulling me into the tube train! Even though the ‘pro camera bag’ didn’t make it. sob!)

I’ll post more about the trip when I’ve found some time to look through some of the photos we took, plus go through the footage in much more detail, but right now I just want to tease you a little with a ‘Trailer’ of the trip.

The final film is going to be so much fun to edit, I just have to find some spare time!!

Also I can’t wait to see some of the stunning photos that the guys took! (hopefully very few of me!)

So, without further ado…

La bande annonce du film au Paris

…Enjoy!

à bientôt !

Wedding Trailer | Susie & Graham | Prestonfield Wedding Edinburgh

Wedding Trailers are great fun to edit!  It’s brilliant to get straight into the footage a few days after the wedding while it’s fresh in my mind.  They also serve as a fabulous teaser for the final film which will be a fair few weeks from completion.

So here is the Wedding Trailer film for Susie and Graham who married at the lovely St Catherine’s Argyle Parish Church in Edinburgh’s Grange, followed by their reception at the always fabulous Prestonfield.  One thing I just love about Prestonfield is the superb lighting they have in the Stables, and it really makes a difference during the dancing (something many other wedding venues could take note of!).

A lovely day, great to see some previous couples at the wedding (and hopefully a couple of future ones too 😉

So without further ado,  Susie & Graham’s Wedding Trailer.

Enjoy!

IOV Awards Finalist 2010 – Best Wedding Film

I received some rather amazing news last week!

I have been selected for the final Top 5 shortlist for the Institute of Videography Awards 2010 for the Best Wedding Film category.

That’s a major achievement and I’m exceptionally proud to be there amongst such illustrious company.  The awards are hotly contended every year and with a record number of entrants this year the competition has never been more fierce.

The IOV are the main UK professional body for film makers from all walks of life (corporate, documentary, TV, wedding & event, music video etc) and with companies entering the Awards from the whole of the UK, to get this far is an amazing achievement for a Scottish Wedding Video company….:-)

To be shortlisted as one of the Top 5 wedding films in the UK is sooo exciting!

The Awards Ceremony is in mid October, so I’ll post a few pics from the night and in the meantime I’ll be keeping everything that’s crossable, firmly crossed.

Not So Lazy Sunday

With the Summer Wedding season in full flow and after an incredibly hectic week it’s just brilliant to take a proper day off and spend a fun day with Yvonne and Callum. With the weather being so fab we once again trooped off to The Meadows for a game of Tennis, followed by coffee and cake, plus a quick frisbee sesh too.

Callum’s tennis is improving well and the we had a great laugh, mostly at Yvonne’s expense 😉 I think her sunglasses were impairing the view of the ball or something.

A great afternoon in the sunshine.

It seems like months since I picked up a stills camera, so here are a few snaps of Callum (and Yvonne!) during our rather exhausting tennis match!

Cheers

Steve

Mrs T - gimme a break! we were supposed to be just going for coffee, but Callum brought my trainers so I could play and he could beat me!

Pre-Wedding Film | Jim & Joanne | Hopetoun House Wedding

Well I’m so excited about Jim & Joanne’s upcoming wedding at the wonderful Hopetoun House, and one of the things that’s helped build that excitement has been getting to know them both over the past few months.

We caught up with the guys last month to film a very special Pre-Wedding interview in and around Malmaison in Leith, so we could put together a film that tells a little bit of how they met, what they thought of each other, the marriage proposal and of course what they are looking forward to at their wedding.

So it’s great to be able to share that with you now.

Jim, Joanne…. it’s been brilliant working with you and we just can’t wait for your wedding, it’s going to be a blast!  It’s also great to be working with the fab Niels and Alie at BlueSky Photography as that means much fun will be had by all!

So here we go, Jim & Joanne…the story continues….

August 23, 2010 - 2:17 pm

Mandy - Gorgeous video – and a great proposal story!! Fantastic choice of wedding photographers too – Niels and Alie will be taking the photos at our wedding in two weeks time!

August 20, 2010 - 4:15 pm

Joann Scott - What a lovely idea, they are such a lovely couple. So nice to hear their story, brilliantly captured.

Vicki & Graeme’s Highlights Film – Dundas Castle Wedding Video

“You are holding the hands of your best friend”.

What we try to do is to create wonderful stories in our wedding films.  It’s so much more than just a random collection of shots slammed together with a cheesy music track.  Everything should just ‘work’ and gel together.

Vicki & Graeme’s Wedding was just wonderful, from the bridal preparations right through to their speeches before dinner we had a blast.  They had so much fun and have a real love for life.  So many touching moments and sometimes it’s just that split second glance, the look or a smile that really makes a shot.

I just loved putting together this film, I hope you like it too.

Steve

Vicki & Graeme - Hi!! We’ve only just realised that this is on here!! So excited! We can’t thank you enough for our amazing film! It was a pleasure to have you guys around on the day, and I can’t tell you how many fans this film has now!! THANK YOU!! Vicki & Graeme xx

Gleneagles Wedding – Nina & Russell’s Wedding Trailer

Nina & Russell’s wedding at the marvellous Gleneagles Hotel was just stunning. Absolutely everything about the day was perfect.

The church had been dressed beautifully, Gleneagles Ballroom looked awesome, and everything went perfectly. We were even treated to a full sit down dinner which was greatly appreciated after a very early start – thank you Mr El-Imad!

We also enjoyed the company of the wonderful Alan & Jackie of Rankine Photography, and look forward to seeing their superb photographs:-)

The film below is our  ‘Wedding Trailer’ option. A unique and self contained wedding film edited within 7-10 days of the wedding.  It gives both a real flavour of the wedding itself and also hopefully leaves you wanting to see more.  If you like this film, then just wait for the main edit coming soon, it’s going to be immense!

So without further ado, I present to you ‘Mr & Mrs Stewart’

Friday Rewind Film

Got some superb wedding films to post very soon, but for now let’s go back a couple of years…

Every once in a while I’m taken back to our amazing trips to New Zealand, and how close we came to emigrating back in 2007-2008.

We were chatting last night and reminiscing about our awesome months out there, a truly brilliant country.

Hey, if anyone out there has a wedding in NZ (October 2010 to April 2011) and want us to film, we’d create an amazing wedding film for you for free…. just cover our travel costs 😉

Anyway, just wanted to ‘rewind’ with one of my favourite little films, knocked together from our 2007 trip (usual disclaimers about using a little travel handicam etc etc).

Yvonne (Mrs DSV) had watched Callum and I do all the adrenaline stuff (bungee, zorb, luge etc) and then just a few days before going home, decided she wanted to outdo us. So, up she went to the top of the Auckland SkyTower, and promptly jumped off (in an organised event btw!).

Brilliant.

So, for my Friday Rewind today…. Yvonne and the SkyTower jump. Enjoy.

Have a fab weekend!

My boy is growing up

This week is pretty important for Callum.

It’s the week where all the P7’s first start to transition from Primary to ‘Big School’ and moving into S1.  He’s had an exciting week and tomorrow gets to spend the whole day in the Senior school.

Before all that though, today was a pretty packed one starting with Sports Day – the last one in Primary School and the last time he’ll do The Egg & Spoon (amongst all the ‘proper’ races).  Slightly weird watching 11yr olds run with an egg and spoon, and most of the P7 boys decided to see how much cheating they could get away with.  Callum scored highly here as you can see by the position of his egg (about 6 feet high and 6ft infront of him!)

Tonight however was a big night for him, the end of Primary School dance.  So he got himself all kilted up again and off to have a fun night with his pals (and the girls – that’s another story, for another time – he got 4 dances though oooh!!).

As a very very proud dad I just had to take a few snaps so here they are.

I’m immensely proud of my boy, he’s such a kind considerate and thoughtful lad.  With a great outgoing personality and great passion in what he does!  I really enjoy watching him grow into a fine young man, though hopefully not too fast!

I love my family.  I’m so very lucky!

Wedding at The Hub, Edinburgh – Gavin & Lynn

“Hello Wife”

Here is the very first wedding that we’ve shot on the new breed of amazing video cameras – Canon DSLR’s.  We’re still getting used to them and adding new lenses all the time, but they are stunning picture-wise so I’m sure we’ll go from strength to strength with them.

This is the beautiful wedding of Gavin & Lynn at The Hub.  These guys are just SO right for each other, they have a lovely outlook on life (and it has to be said a very good taste in music!).

I’ll let the film clip speak for itself but my favourite part… the very last line.. look out for it!  That says it all.

Brilliant! Thank You!

I reckon it must be karma.

This week has been extremely hard work, long long hours of editing, one great film produced and a few irritating ‘technicals’ (a phrase we once heard pronounced over the tannoy at Heathrow when explaining the delay of our flight to Auckland!).

So, overall a very productive but at times stressful week.

Then karma kicks in to even things out, as the postie arrives with an unexpected parcel…

A simply wonderful card and pressie from one of our January couples – the brilliant Lynn & Gavin.  Thank you guys!

You may have seen the teaser for their film a couple of months back, well their final film has all been delivered and they absolutely LOVED it!.

I’ll share the highlights with you soon….but not just yet 😉  It’s something rather different from the norm…but more news on that to come.

Lynn and Gavin were delighted with their film, and their wonderful box of goodies, and heartfelt card have given me a great end to a busy week.

It’s so rewarding to get emails from couples telling me how delighted they are with their wedding films, and it was so special to hear from L&G how much the films means, and how valuable it is to them.

In fact there are two quotes that I’d love to share with you from L&G that really made me sit up and pay attention:

First from an email from Lynn to Gavin as they talked about the film:

“It’s just so amazing, the film, I’m still trying to work out how on earth I can put it into words.

It is history, our history together. What an utterly amazing day it was.  I love the “hello wife bit”; I don’t remember that at all. Funny how it’s all a blur, imagine if you never got to see the film and all those important bits were just gone!”

How amazing, ‘imagine if all those important bits were just gone!” Something I have oft thought about but have never been able to put into words so eloquently.

Secondly from their card to me this morning:

“So many little things are forgotten in the whirlwind of the day, to have them on film is such a gift…You captured the emotion, smiles, tears, jokes and intensity perfectly…we want to tell everyone how brilliant you are.”

I think getting to know Gavin & Lynn, and what’s important to them, helped me to create a film that is perfect for them. One that does show all the little things so quickly forgotten, or indeed lost forever.  We strive to make creative, beautiful, and entertaining wedding films.  But above all that we make wedding films that are totally individual.  The ‘stars’ of the film change at every wedding, so we have a different story to tell at every wedding and that’s our sole aim.  To tell a brilliant personal story.

Gavin, Lynn…. thanks for your super kind gift, Callum has already earmarked the Sherbet (and don’t worry Yvonne will get my last Rolo!), but Yvonne, Stuart and I thank you for being an amazing couple it’s been fabulous getting to know you both!

Thanks again to all our couples, we absolutely LOVE telling your stories!

Have a fab weekend everyone. (I’m off to delve into my awesome sweetie box!)

Steve

June 10, 2010 - 9:50 pm

admin - Jelly babies all gone. Yvonne’s on my last Rolo, Callum wolfed the Sherbet, Stu knicked the flake and the gummy bears…. Mmmm what’s next?

Something completely different – not a wedding dress in sight!

I had a whole weekend off this past weekend.  So did I sit back and relax, chill, do some shopping, muck about with Callum, go out for a nice meal with Yvonne?  No.

Well yes, I did actually do all of that but I also got around to editing some footage I took months ago!  Our neighbours son, Alex, is a totally mad downhill mountain bike nut and last Autumn I filmed him and a pal down at Bonaly doing their thing.  The filming was great fun, and with the guys flying past me just inches from my lens, it involved a level of bravery only surpassed by being on the dancefloor filming a dashing white sergeant at a recent Anglo-Irish wedding.

Alex has been hassling me for months now to get the edit completed so I sat aside a couple of hours yesterday and made their film.  Here’s the ‘highlights’ edit.  All filmed handheld, and I kept the edit nice and simple, no big filters etc  – although I might add some later, as 17yr old mountain bike dudes seem to just love those crazy filters   😉

I have to be honest I’m not 100% sure why I’m posting it here, maybe I need a ‘non-wedding’ blog too?  Anyhow, it’s a nice diversion from the norm and it does feature one of my favourite bands of the moment (30 Seconds to Mars)

So if you’re here to watch one of our fab wedding films, you might just want to skip this one tee hee!

Happy Days.

Steve

June 17, 2010 - 2:57 pm

Alan Auld - Great work Steve! Loved the flow of the video to the pace of the music. Did I see a GoPro in there? The slow-mo effects were great too.
